You make a good point Viper. Because the PhysX card will be a relatively new and immature piece of hardware it may well just be one more source of potential problems in the long run. It's a shame with dual and multi-core CPUs that some of this work couldn't just be dumped to the usually idle second core of a dual core CPU.

Yes, in all likelihood it is primarily a means of getting us to go out and spend more money to buy new motherboards which can accommodate the new PhysX cards, as well as the cards themselves.

I read somewhere that future ASUS motherboards will be incorporating the PhysX chips onboard... I'll try to find it. I know for certain that they are (or will be) manufacturing PCI cards...

I don't know how people with an SLI setup could run a PCI-e x1 or x4 card, because the slots are always postioned between the two GPU's!

***EDIT*** Movie just finished downloading - first impression is that they still can't get fire to look like fire - but the clouds look awesome, and I love the day/night feature.

Just did a Google search on "motherboard incorporating PhysX" and guess what? The first result that appears is this thread in this forum!

A further search brought up this page:

Quote:
We know that Ageia plans on implementing several different interfaces, including - but not limited to - PCI-E, PCI and on-board motherboard integrated solutions. Ageia tells us that we should see boards out by the end of this year.
The page is dated March 8th 2005 and no sign of the card itself, let alone on-board integrated stuff. Maybe they meant 2006?

/Edit: Here we go, about ASUS partnering with Ageia, but nothing on integration with a motherboard.

I reckon that intergration on high-end motherboards would be the best way to go about utilising the PhysX processor. Stryker found the links for me , I knew I read it around the time of E3 2005...

I see some developers on their page, http://www.ageia.com/physxInAction/games.html.

If games really give a performance boost, then I will surely buy one and be happy with it. I wonder what game Obsidian could be doing with the card.

You have to remember that personal interest aside, it is hard for me to write guides if I don't have the relevant technology myself. For example having a dual core CPU has really opened my eyes to the various practical and technical issues of using one, so I can provide relevant advice.
Do you think that in time or near future, that all future pc games require vista?

I can't see that happening. The number one thing driving all developers/publishers is money. Releasing a game just for Vista would be cutting off a large part of their potential sales, as they know that not every single person will be going to Vista immediately or getting DX10 hardware the second it is out.

I think that most high-end games will require Vista due to DX10, as well as any other "improvements" that Vista may offer. Remember Doom 3 and Quake 4? Windows 2000 or XP only, because of .NET.

Support for Windows 98 and ME has now officially ended, so it is only a mater of time until Windows 2000 and XP will run their course. It will be a long time before XP goes, but Windows 2000 is already 6 or 7 years years old. Once support for the OS goes, then game companies will be reluctant to release games that support that OS...

so,basically,if i upgraded now,i just wasted my money?Lets hope not...
Anyway,untill DX10 launches,and of course,Vista aswell,we don't know s**t.
Remember the PS/VS2.0?How many games were there that actually used intensively these shaders? Not many, because most of the games were multiplat, and couldnt afford to go 2.0.Now because consoles support 3.0,most multiplat games will more likely limit to 3.0,having 4.0 only to boost speed and performance, maybe add more shadows and such.OR PC Games will immediatly support all the way DX10 due to agressive MS campaigns.Who knows? As for now,i'll happily upgrade my PC,because there's no point in waiting for the next best thing.Only if you already have a system capable of running 3.0 games.

Of course it will happen eventually, but i mean its not going to happen that the day Vista comes out, or even 6 months after that XP is going to be obsolete and not able to be used for gaming. Sure there might be one or 2 games that are Vista only, but until Vista is more widely accepted, which in this case could/might/probably will involve a hardware upgrade for DX10, then game companies won't stop supporting DX9/XP for a while yet
