Default Computer Addiction

Why are computers so addictive? I've been on computers since i was about ten and grown up with them. I've never owned any console system ever, no Xbox, no playstation, no gamecube no nothing. The computer seems to outdo all those things put together. Consoles are great don't get me wrong but they seem to be a peg lower than computers, they dont have the capabilities and features but they don't have the long list of issues and tech problems so its a trade off between the two. If you have the patients a computer is far superior to any console and that being a post in itself i'll stop there. But just recently i spent 2000$ Canadian dollars upgrading my computer, yes upgrading not buying an entirely new system so i've been shelling out a load of cash for this machine, and yet even though i know it will be outdated in a few years i still wanna spend. Theres always something to upgrade and it feels like your chasing a ghost, because there is no end to this. Always something to be desired, something faster, more processing power, more pixel pipelines, more cache, more ram, higher refresh rates, and so on. I can say that my system is slightly above midrange:

AMD Athlon X2 3800+
BFG GeForce 7800 GT OC
2GB OCZ Ram 3-3-3-7
(2) 74GB Western Digital Raptors *Soon to be added*
ASUS A8N-SLI Motherboard
17' LCD Screen 26ms Refresh Rate
Creative Inspire GD580 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers
Audigy Sound Blaster 2 ZS
Logitech MX518 Mouse
LG 52x16 DVD-RW Drive
Enermax 500W SLI and SATA ready PSU

This rest is more or less stock or doesnt have a great effect on my performance anyways. And despite the fact that i can run any game in high settings there is always new stuff to desire. When will it end? And now even though i need to be saving up for University which is around the corner i still feel tempted to spend money on my system. Computers Rock. What can i say? I've learned a lot over the past few years about PC's and i went from a time where i wasn't able to install a game on my own up to this point were formatting, reinstalling, tweaking windows and tampering with BIOS seems like a walk in the park. I'd like to see Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 pull that off with the all the customibility a PC has. I don't plan on buying a console anytime in the future and will stick by my increasingly addictive computer.

I hear you and fully agree with all of what you've just said, PC's are addictive and I'll admit I'm addicted also. I love the thrill of the chase always wanting to tend to my system spec's in order to have the latest and greatest beast to play the latest and greatest games.

I look at it this way, its the same as if your into hotting up ya car or glamourising the garden, its human nature to want the best when your into whatever your into. More power to us!! 8) long live the PC.

Heh getting into PC's helped me beat a few other addictions. Pc's might be just as expensive, but sooo much better for my health and actually way more fun. No more day after!

sooo much better for your health? I've been using PCs for a while now and one thing I've noticed is that my back, neck and wrists are all worse-off then they were before. I never had to click those joints to get rid of any annoyingness

I know the feeling all to well, i'm not happy until every little thing on my computer is tweaked the best it can be. So many nights of lost sleep.

I disagree, there have been a few times in the past where I've been far to knackered to do anything else because I was up til late trying sort out something with my PC.

I do agree that they are addictive. I work in front of a PC all day at work and then go home and spend quite a bit of time in front of another one or two sorting out other stuff.

Ok dude stop upgrading (this goes to all your money splurging guys)
your system is high end

mine is
AMD 2600+ barton core OC'd 2.1ghz
512DDR RAM
Radeon 9600XT

and I'm happy with it, can run the latest games and it does what I want
I'm not upgrading till 2nd generation Direct X 10 cards come out

I too spend alot of time on my PC and do quite alot on it..and no Console will beat that
I too feel that Xbox/PS2 are..well useless compared to PC and the Xbox 360/PS3 is nothing but a one trick pony since the PC will beat it

Appreciate the damn machine and spend your money on other things since you will never be up to date with the latest stuff since thats what the companies want you to crave for

Some addictions are even better in combination with each other.
