Partical effects are what I mean by nice touches, but that's not enough for me. I can only run by so many cargo containers, barrels and boxes before I get to the lame hallways before I uninstall. I'm psyched for Call of Jaurez just because of the wonderful element of originality it launches. If you think that FEAR was original then you haven't played enough games imo. I'm having way more fun playing a tactical shooter called Ghost Recon Advanced Warrior. I didn't realize FEAR was a tactical shooter as I never really played the SP element, as I had my old 9600Pro and the game kinda reminded me of The Suffering when it's creepy parts kicked in so I didn't give it much attention, thank dog for "Try Before You Buy" methods...

Default Fear Combat Startup Error

Heres my problem, though it seems I'm not the only one with this problem. Whenever I click on the icon to launch the game, a dreaded message pops-up.

"F.E.A.R. has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

For more information about this error, click here."

Talk about bad luck.
This error seems to be related to a software bug, not hardware related.

Now I believe that it is probably Creative or Realtek, or Onboard audio controllers that are the issue.

Another person with this issue here:

Another one,

And also,

Moderator Edit:
Merged into main F.E.A.R. thread. Although its about the new free multiplayer FEAR, its still FEAR, so i've merged it into here - SortYa

I've renamed the thread to show that it covers both games, since FEAR Combat is just the multiplayer component of FEAR, there's no other real difference between the two.

I must say that I think the game is very good looking indeed.

Novaspy, I respect your opinion but you say you were running it all "Maxed-Out" but then you state you were using a 9600pro. In which case you would not be able to run it maxed out and I have the same procesoor and 512mb more ram than you. My 9800 pro can barely run the game and thats the card it recommends on the damn box!

I do think however it tries to be more tactical than it is. I like all the dust and debris flying off a wall as you empty your SMG clip into a group of people. So much depth in the game that was then and I think is now, really important in a game. The guns I thought acted well with the recoil and the sounds of them were so well done in my opinion.

Which is what it really boils down to....... Opinion.

My sound is a C-MEDIA which is based on an ac97 audio, have you got the latest drivers for your audio. I get mine from the VIA site.

^ jackc1990,

Yeah, I have the latest AC'97 Audio Codec Drivers from Realtek.

However, it still does not startup.

is there a F.EA.R combat configuration utility like there is with FEAR and Condemned. If there is, try disabling intro movies, sound, sound filters etc

I am running FEAR Combat with a 7800GS with all setting maxed out and if you are saying the FEAR single player has better graphics, then you will have a point, but if it's the same, then I'm not all that impressed. If this was the first PC game you ever saw, then you would think it was spectacular.

I am wondering if anyone has any advice on what download methods for COMBAT gave them the best speed?
It is important.

To start with, use a download manager like DownThemAll on Firefox to ensure you can resume the download, and that it also downloads at maximum speed from several links.

Then try downloading from a relatively stable source like Fileshack or one of the other major file hosting places. That way the file isn't suddenly removed or becomes hard to find (as can happen with torrents for example).
