so I was playing ONLINE and I think its quite good ... but cant tell more because Iam getting diconnected every 5-10 min. while in game :-( anyone got some idea why? .... many people experience this

My guess is the EA servers are too busy or something. Also I get disconnected every 5-10 minutes on some, but not all servers.

yes ... I was playing earlier and DEMO was stable with no disconnects at all so I will do some research and post it later.

I have been trying to get the demo to work but if just crashes on startup saying BF2142 has encountered an error. In troubleshooting I saw the readme suggest uninstalling the KB917422 update. Unfortunately I have previously deleted the $NtUninstallKB917422 folder from windows. I have tried ticking the "show updates" box in uninstall but to no joy. Does anyone know how to remove the update withou having to do a full XP install?

Refer to the existing Battlefield 2 Tweak Guide for tweaks for the moment until I get a BF2142 guide up and running. They have the same engine and the same things work on both, such as setting custom resolutions in the Video.con file.

morkboy - I don't know a way of uninstalling a patch without its uninstall files, but how about you try to reinstall the same patch (if you can find it again on the Windows Update site for example, or search on Google), which should simply overwrite it again and create the correct uninstall files, then you can uninstall it again normally which delete all traces of it.

A basic in-game movie here covering a few of the weapons and vehicles.

Haven't had a chance to do anything fancy yet, everyone seems to be struggling with how to work the new equipment.


Gameplay/Performance

Gameplay and performance seem smooth, pretty much on par with BF2. I'm getting around 50-70FPS even at 1280x1024 with all max settings on an X24400+/2GB RAM/7800GTX. Heavy combat and lots of effects does dip FPS down, but never below 30FPS as far as I've seen.

It does seem like just a BF2 mod, but for some reason I'm finding it a bit more fun than BF2, possibly because it's set in the future so we don't expect as much realism from it. However it won't take long for the exploiters to find ways of ruining gameplay, so let's hope EA patches exploits and bad tactics quickly.

Initial loading times are horrendously long as the game has to optimize shaders, but after that they're fine. I haven't played long enough yet to see if I keep getting disconnected, but seeing as how it's based on the same engine as BF2 (which also had this problem), it may well be something which needs to be patched.

Bear in mind also that EA's master server is under a lot of load right now so that's also possible another cause for constant disconnects, and should die down in the next few days.


Custom Resolution

It also looks like editing the Video.con file doesn't work in setting 1280x1024 for me, it still looks to be 1024x768 when I enter the game, so I'll have to look into that further. If it's working for you please let me know. For me, editing the Video.con results in crashes.

However a method which does work is to add the +szx 1280 +szy 1024 commands to the BF2142's launch icon Properties>Target box so it looks something like this:

Skipping Intro Movies

The +restart command doesn't work, but to skip the intro movies simply rename all the movie .bik files to something else. These are found under your \Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142 Demo\mods\bf2142\Movies directory.


General Tips/Troubleshooting

I also have the KB917422 security patch installed and it seems like it does indeed crash the game at times. I tried installing the patch again, but it doesn't recreate the uninstall files unfortunately. BF2142 is the first mainstream game I've seen which requires you to uninstall an MS security patch to play!

You must make sure you have the August DirectX Update installed to play this game properly otherwise you may get DX9 related startup errors.

To fix the constant crashing at startup, I deleted my profile from the \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\Battlefield 2142 Demo\Profiles\ directory (i.e. I deleted the 0001 and Default folders), and that lets me restart the game. From there I've had no crashes as long as I don't modify anything.

Trying to add the +restart command (to skip intro movies) to the game's launch icon or deleting/renaming the movies files seemed to trigger crashing for me, so if someone else has tried it and it works, please let me know.

Importantly As always for BF games, make sure to disable any refresh rate fixes like RefreshForce if you're crashing at startup.

Note that if you are still having problems try clearing the shader cache (i.e. delete the subfolders under the \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\Battlefield 2142 Demo\mods\bf2142\cache directory).

Also, if you want to see the actual ping of servers in the server browser rather than the green/orange/red bars, click the Advanced tab at the top of the server browser screen. You can then also enter filter values for each column.

Well, after futhur testing/playing, i´ve found out that my game is crashing (standard application error - send or dont send error report to MS) all the time (withing 2-4 minutes of gameplay).

I´ve tried uninstalling the KB917422-patch. I´ve reinstalled the latest DirectX, disabled refreshforce, deleted my profiles, used software sound but nothing has helped.

This is as much as I´m willing to touch my system in order to get this demo to work. To be honest, all games run great without any problems so i don´t want to compromise this for a demo. I´m starting to see what the fuzz about EA is all about though.

you should be able to use the command line forced res change as in BF2 - I could with the Beta.

For example, one of the most commonly requested commands is to run BF2 in 1280x1024 resolution (or another custom resolution) - particularly for LCD displays which display the best image at their native resolution. To do this, change your command line to look like this:

"C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 1024

Note the addition of the +szx and +szy commands which respectively set the width and height of the resolution to be used. Substitute other values for other resolutions (e.g. +szx 1900 +szy 1200). Also note that as of the 1.03 Patch, 1280x1024 is now a supported resolution and can be selected within the in-game settings, so you don't need to use the +szx/+szy commands to force it anymore.
